Water Safety for Dogs as Temperatures Rise

As the mercury climbs and the days grow warmer, outdoor activities with our furry friends become increasingly appealing. Whether it's a stroll through the park, a game of fetch, or a day at the beach, ensuring our pets stay hydrated and safe near water is paramount. Today, we’re diving into essential water safety tips for dogs, focusing on the importance of hydration, recognizing the signs of dehydration, and adhering to safe swimming practices.

**Hydration is Key**

Just like humans, dogs need more water as temperatures rise. Water facilitates every metabolic process in a dog's body, including temperature regulation. Without adequate water intake, our dogs can quickly become overheated and dehydrated.

Keep fresh, clean water available at all times, and bring a portable water bowl on outings. Encourage your dog to drink before, during, and after any physical activity. Remember, if you’re feeling thirsty, your dog probably is too.

**Recognizing Signs of Dehydration**

Dehydration in dogs can escalate from mild to severe very quickly. As responsible pet owners, we need to recognize the signs early. Here are a few indicators of dehydration:

- Dry gums that are sticky to the touch

- Excessive drooling

- Lethargy or decreased energy levels

- Loss of skin elasticity (You can check this by gently lifting the skin on the back of your dog’s neck. If the skin doesn’t readily fall back into place, your dog may be dehydrated.)

If you notice any of these signs, get your dog to shade immediately and offer small amounts of water. Severe cases may require veterinary attention for rehydration therapy.

**Safe Swimming Practices**

Not all dogs are natural swimmers, and even those who are can encounter difficulties in water. Here are tips to keep swimming safe and enjoyable:

- **Never Assume**: Never assume your dog can swim or enjoys water. Introduce your pet to water gradually and keep initial swim sessions short.

- **Life Jackets**: Consider a life jacket for your dog, especially if swimming in deep water or for extended periods. This can provide buoyancy and visibility.

- **Supervision is a Must**: Always supervise your dog in and around water. Even experienced swimmers can get into trouble, such as becoming trapped in water plants or struggling to exit a pool.

- **Rinse Off**: Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine, salt, or bacteria from their coat. Also, ensure they don’t drink water from pools, oceans, or lakes, which could contain harmful substances.

- **Heed the Heat**: Avoid the hottest parts of the day, and always provide a shaded area and fresh water to prevent overheating.

**Heatstroke Awareness**

Finally, an essential aspect of water safety is recognizing and preventing heatstroke. Heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, and lack of coordination are all signs of heatstroke. If you suspect your dog is experiencing heatstroke, move them to a cooler environment immediately and consult a veterinarian.

My husband and I moved here from the Texas Hill Country back in 2015 and have been here on our property ever since! I was nursing up until that point and finally was able to achieve my dream of opening a luxury dog care facility back in 2017. I still love it after all these years as it has brought some truly awesome dogs and wonderful people across our paths. I am truly blessed to have earned the trust of our wonderful community with the care of their beloved dogs!
