Keeping Your Senior Dog Active & Engaged

Let’s continues with our spotlight on seniors. As our beloved senior dogs age, their daily needs change. It's essential to prioritize their health and well-being through gentle exercise and mental stimulation. Here are some activities to help maintain your senior dog's mobility and keep their minds sharp!

Gentle Exercise Activities

1. Short Walks

Regular short walks are an excellent way to keep your dog active without overexertion. Aim for several 10-15 minute walks a day at a leisurely pace. This not only engages their muscles but also offers them a chance to enjoy scents and sights in your neighborhood.

2. Swimming

If your dog enjoys water, swimming is a fantastic low-impact exercise that can significantly benefit senior dogs. It's easy on their joints while providing a complete body workout. Always supervise your dog in the water and consider using a doggy life vest for added safety.

3. Light Play

Engage in gentle play sessions with soft toys or balls. A game of fetch in a safe, enclosed area can be invigorating without being too strenuous. Keep the sessions short and allow your dog plenty of breaks to rest.

Mental Stimulation

1. Puzzle Toys

Invest in puzzle toys specifically designed for dogs. These interactive toys challenge their minds, requiring them to think and problem-solve to retrieve treats. This can keep them entertained and mentally engaged for an extended period.

2. Training Games

Gentle training sessions can be both fun and stimulating. Teach them new tricks using positive reinforcement techniques. Keep it light and playful to ensure your dog enjoys the process, and always celebrate their successes, no matter how small.

3. Scent Games*

Engage your dog’s natural sniffing instincts by playing scent games. Hide treats around your home or yard and encourage your dog to find them. This encourages mental engagement and utilizes their sense of smell in delightful ways.

As dogs age, it's paramount to adapt their exercise routine to accommodate their changing abilities. Gentle activities like short walks and swimming, coupled with mental stimulants like puzzle toys and training games, can help keep your senior dog happy and healthy. Regular engagement in these activities ensures that their golden years are both enjoyable and fulfilling.

Remember, always consult your veterinarian before beginning any new exercise program to ensure it’s suitable for your dog's specific health needs.

My husband and I moved here from the Texas Hill Country back in 2015 and have been here on our property ever since! I was nursing up until that point and finally was able to achieve my dream of opening a luxury dog care facility back in 2017. I still love it after all these years as it has brought some truly awesome dogs and wonderful people across our paths. I am truly blessed to have earned the trust of our wonderful community with the care of their beloved dogs!
